#embroidery #makerspace
Couple of days ago, I turned one of my old map illustrations into embroidery at Makerspace Umeå! The map shows the streets of Växjö, where Danuta Danielsson famously hit a Nazi on the head with her handbag. The process was fun, but I learned a lot—next time, I’ll focus on clearer silhouettes and stronger boundaries.
Fun fact: Danuta Danielsson was a Polish-Swedish woman whose mother survived Auschwitz. In 1985, a photo captured her swinging her handbag at a marching neo-Nazi in Växjö. The image became a powerful anti-fascist symbol in Sweden.
This project also sparked a new idea—what if I create a book of embroidered textile maps? Maybe a map of endangered flowers in Sweden?
Biggest unexpected joy: threading the sewing machine in seven smooth hand movements—it felt like a dance!
